Under the leadership of former superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen, redefinED atlanta supported APS’s creation of a district level accountability system in 2018. While the investment did not result in the adoption of such a system, steps were taken in the right direction. Many accountability and equity principles were included in the APS 2020-25 strategic plan, including defining equity as the core of the plan, making several equity commitments, and creating work streams to frame autonomy and supporting schools to improve. Additionally, redefinED partnered with Annie E. Casey Foundation and Kendeda Fund to invest in APS hiring a Chief Equity and Social Justice Officer to ensure fidelity in the implementation of its equity work.
